Semenjak Sony menanggalkan nama Ericsson, sekarang Sony telah memperkenalkan seri smartphone pertamanya yang disebut NXT Series. Seri NXT ini memiliki ciri khas tersendiri, dimana ketiga smartphone dalam seri ini (Xperia S, Xperia P dan Xperia U) semuanya hampir sama bentuknya pada sisi desainnya. Kesemuanya didesain kotak dengan lengkungan di bagian sisi belakang serta memiliki sudut-sudut tegas. Salah satu perbedaan yang sangat menojol terletak pada bagian dimensinya saja dimana Xperia U berukuran paling ringkas.
Tipe Xperia S yang memiliki spesifikasi paling besar diantara yang lain adalah merupakan tipe Xperia yang pertama diluncurkan di tanah Indonesia. Dan yang akhir-akhir ini diluncurkan adalah seri Xperia U. Dimana Smartphone yang satu ini adalah merupakan produk yang paling ekonomis dijajaran NXT Series, namun jangan anggap enteng karena Xperia U memiliki sejumlah keistimewaan yang bahkan tidak dimiliki oleh Xperia P dan Xperia S yang notabene lebih mahal.
Selain itu keistimewaan dari Xperia U dibanding Xperia S dan Xperia P juga terletak pada desain. Dimana bagian transparan warisan Xperia Pureness bisa mengeluarkan cahaya yang warnanya bisa berubah-ubah mengikuti warna yang dominan pada layar. Sebagian paling bawah (bottom cap) yang terletak setelah area transparan bisa dibuka-buka untuk diganti dengan warna lain.
